Objective: Leukemia is one of the most common causes of death worldwide. Leukemia is a group of types of cancer that usually starts in the bone marrow and causes the formation of a large number of abnormal white blood cells. These white blood cells are not fully formed and they are called blasts or leukemia cells or blood cancer. Medicinal plants are used in traditional medicine to treat cancer. The purpose of this study is to identify the most important medicinal plants that are used in traditional medicine for the treatment of leukemia.
Methodology: This review article was conducted by searching the keywords of medicinal plants and blood cancer from databases such as Web of Science, Medline, PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar. Related articles were used to review the texts.
Results: Medicinal plants such as periwinkle, chyle, pipe taxus, mistletoe, night jasmine, vernonia, mayteneus, devil's tide, lizard's tail, marsh apple, olive, Mexican sunflower and a number of other plants are used to treat leukemia.
Conclusion: Medicinal plants are rich in plant antioxidants and have an anti-leukemia effect due to their effective medicinal compounds.
