Objective: Parkinson's is a progressive and chronic neurological disease in which the activity of the part of the brain that is responsible for controlling fine movements and coordinating muscles is disrupted. This disease is the most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's. Many drugs and treatments have been suggested for this disease; But each of these chemical drugs have side effects, and the amount and time of their effectiveness is also different. Another method of treating Parkinson's disease that does not have the disadvantages of chemical drugs is the use of herbal medicines. The purpose of this review is to identify the most important medicinal plants that are used in traditional medicine to treat Parkinson's disease.
Method: This review article was conducted by searching the keywords of medicinal plants, traditional medicine, Parkinson's, brain and nerves from databases such as Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus and Google Scholar. Unrelated related articles were removed and finally related articles were used to review the texts.
Results: In traditional Iranian medicine, medicinal plants such as black seed, frankincense, thyme, gerbera, ginger, angelica, turmeric, cinnamon, olive, tea, plum, fig, borage, tree almond, lavender and scutellaria are some of the plants. which have been used in traditional Iranian medicine for the treatment of Parkinson's disease since ancient times.
Conclusion: some plants with medicinal properties can help to improve the condition of the affected person along with medical interventions. The studies on these medicinal plants are not enough and more studies should be done to reach a definite result.
