<abstract>
Objective: Mucuna pruriens, commonly known as velvet bean, is a climbing legume of the Fabaceae family. This study aimed to perform qualitative and quantitative phytochemical analyses and to identify the bioactive compounds present in the ethanolic seed extract of M. pruriens using GC-MS.
Methods: Dried M. pruriens seed powder was extracted with ethanol at a 1:10 ratio using cold maceration. The extract was concentrated to dryness in a hot water bath over 72 hours. GC-MS analysis was conducted using Agilent Technologies equipment to characterize the phytochemical constituents. Identified compounds were compared against the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) library for verification.
Results: Preliminary phytochemical screening indicated the presence of alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, saponins, steroids, tannins, and terpenoids. GC-MS analysis revealed five major bioactive compounds in the ethanolic seed extract.
Conclusion: The ethanolic extract of M. pruriens seeds contains diverse bioactive phytochemicals, highlighting its potential as a source of natural compounds with therapeutic and pharmacological relevance. Further studies are warranted to explore the biological activities of the identified constituents
