Objective: Obesity is one of the most important public health problems in the world which is associated with increased risk of metabolic, cardiovascular and inflammatory diseases. Increasing scientific evidence shows that imbalance of intestinal parasites plays a key role in regulating the metabolism of energy, fat storage and obesity and probiotics can be effective in improving these disorders.
Methods: In this review, the articles published in reputable databases such as PubMed, Scopus and web of science were reviewed. selected studies were analyzed based on the effects of probiotics on anthropometric indices, lipid and glucose metabolism and intestinal microbiota.
Results: The results of the study showed that some probiotic strains such as lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium able to decrease body weight, body mass index and fat mass by regulating energy metabolism, reducing inflammation and improving insulin sensitivity. Also, probiotics consumption was associated with improvement of lipid profiles and metabolic indices.
Conclusion: Based on the available evidence, probiotics can be considered as a safe and promising complementary approach in management and treatment of obesity. however, more trials are needed to determine effective strains, appropriate dosage, and optimal duration of consumption.
