Abstract:   (80 Views)
Objective: Tricyclic antidepressants are commonly prescribed for treating depression and are notably linked to a significant mortality rate globally due to their overutilization by physicians. Given the severe side effects and high mortality associated with tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) poisoning, alongside the prevalent occurrence of poisoning involving various drugs, including TCAs, this study aims to explore the prevalence of TCA poisoning in symptomatic patients referred to the poisoning department of Shahid Mostafa Khomeini Hospital in Ilam city during 2021 and 2022.
Methods: This study investigated cases of poisoning in the years 2021 and 2022 at the poisoning department of Shahid Mostafa Khomeini Hospital in Ilam City. Data encompassing age, gender, and TCA levels in blood and stool samples of poisoned patients were collected, followed by statistical analysis utilizing SPSS software and the Mann-Whitney test.
Results: Examination of 2217 poisoning cases in 2021 and 1120 cases in 2022 revealed a TCA poisoning rate of 6.4% in 2021 and 2.6% in 2022. Nortriptyline emerged as the most frequently utilized drug, leading to poisoning incidents predominantly among individuals aged 20-35, encompassing both genders.
Conclusion: The findings highlight a prevalence of TCA poisonings at 6.4% in 2021 and 2.6% in 2022, shedding light on the misuse of this drug class, particularly among young patients, notably females, within the province.
