Objective: Atherosclerosis is a chronic disease characterized by the accumulation of fatty plaques and other substances in the arterial walls, leading to the narrowing and blockage of blood vessels, which in turn can result in cardiovascular problems. This disease is associated with factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and genetic predisposition. Atherosclerosis is one of the leading causes of mortality in modern societies, necessitating effective and preventive therapeutic methods. The aim of this review study is to explore the most important medicinal plants effective in atherosclerosis in Iranian traditional medicine and to analyze their mechanisms of action in preventing and treating this disease.
Methods: For this review, keywords including medicinal plants, traditional medicine, native plants of Iran, and atherosclerosis were used. Articles were searched through scientific databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, and Web of Science, as well as specialized sources including reference books, encyclopedias, and comprehensive online resources.
Results: The medicinal plants effective in the treatment of atherosclerosis in Iranian traditional medicine include horsetail, lemon, turmeric, rosemary, garlic, milk thistle, artichoke, hawthorn, ginger, red pepper, St. John's Wort, dill, parsley, sage, thyme, cabbage, celery, carrot, lettuce, spinach, pumpkin, green tea, chicory, sumac, alfalfa, mint, flaxseed, apple, burdock, savory, onion, purslane, soy, and coriander.
Conclusion: Medicinal plants in Iranian traditional medicine, with their active compounds exhibiting anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and lipid-lowering effects, play a significant role in the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis. These plants are particularly effective in reducing inflammation, improving vascular function, and reducing the accumulation of fatty plaques, thus helping to improve the condition of atherosclerosis. However, further clinical studies and extensive trials are necessary to confirm the therapeutic effects and appropriate dosages of these plants, so that they can be utilized as complementary therapeutic options in the management of atherosclerosis.
