Objective: Anemia occurs when the human body cannot produce or have enough healthy red blood cells. Anemia occurs mainly due to blood loss, destruction of red blood cells and the body's inability to produce red blood cells. There are different types of anemia, including iron deficiency anemia and vitamin deficiency anemia. Some medicinal plants are highly effective in treating anemia due to their iron and nutrient content. The aim of this review is to identify medicinal plants that are used to treat anemia in northwest Iran.
Methodology: In the present review study, the keywords of medicinal plants, Iran, anemia, hematopoietic, Urmia, Tabriz, Ardabil, West Azerbaijan, East Azerbaijan, and ethnobotany were used to search for articles. Databases such as Google Scholar, SID, Magiraan, PubMed, Scopus were used for searching. Related ethnobotanical articles were used to review the texts.
Results: Based on the review results, it was determined that medicinal plants include Nasturtium sp., Salvia officinalis, Centaurea depressa, Centaurea virgate, Achillea biebersteinii, Cichorium intybus, Urtica dioica, Prunus cerasifera, Cichorium intybus, Saponaria officinalis, Foeniculum vulgare, Achillea millefolium, Berberis vulgaris, Capsella bursa-pastoris, Crataegus aronia, Adiantum capillus-Veneris, Anthemis cotula, Gandelia tourenfortii, Rheus ribes, Lactuca virosa, Hyssopus officinale and Salix alba are medicinal plants that are used in traditional and ethnobotanical medicine to treat anemia.
Conclusion: Phytochemical analysis of medicinal plants of this study and identification of effective compounds affecting anemia and hematopoiesis are recommended. It is also possible to use the medicinal plants mentioned in this study in pharmacological research in animal and human models based on clinical trial studies of the use of medicinal plants or making combined herbal medicines in the treatment of anemia.
