Objective: Hypertension refers to an abnormal increase in blood pressure against the arterial walls, leading to severe complications such as cardiovascular diseases, kidney failure, atherosclerosis, visual disorders, and strokes. The aim of this study was to identify medicinal plants in the western border regions of Iran that are used for managing hypertension.
Methods: This review study utilized keywords such as medicinal plants, hypertension, ethnobotany, Iran, and the provinces of Isfahan, Fars, Yazd, Markazi, Qom, Alborz, and Semnan to search for relevant articles. Databases including Google Scholar, SID, MegaIran, PubMed, and Scopus were employed for the search. Relevant ethnobotanical articles were selected for review and analysis.
Results: The findings indicate the effectiveness of several medicinal plants in controlling and managing hypertension. Medicinal plants such as Echium amoenum, Hyssopus officinalis, Rheum ribes, Valeriana officinalis, Silybum marianum, Mentha piperita, Thymus vulgaris, Bupleurum falcatum, Olea europaea, and Cinnamomum verum, and etc. with their anti-inflammatory, calming, and antioxidant properties, have demonstrated potential in reducing high blood pressure. These plants can serve as natural treatments for preventing cardiovascular diseases.
Conclusion: Studies suggest that medicinal plants with anti-inflammatory, calming, and antioxidant properties can effectively lower high blood pressure and prevent cardiovascular diseases. These plants hold promise as complementary natural treatments in the management of hypertension.
