Abstract: (106 Views)
Introduction: Infertility is a global challenge for couples and can result from various factors. Studies have shown a link between oxidative stress and infertility, highlighting the role of antioxidants in reducing reproductive damage. Certain medicinal plants with antioxidant properties are traditionally used for this purpose. This review focuses on the effects of Pistacia atlantica, Capparis spinosa., Matricaria chamomilla L., and Ferulago angulata plants commonly found in Iran’s Zagros Mountains on the reproductive system.
Objective: This study systematically reviewed research on the effects of Zagros-native plant species on infertility, analyzing findings from multiple scientific databases through qualitative methods.
Methods: All the indexed searches were limited to Persian and English with the terms ((“Fertility” OR “Reproductive System” OR “Testis," "Oocyte" OR "Sexual hormone" OR "LH" OR "FSH" OR "Testosterone" OR "Semen,")AND("Zagros mountains" OR " Pistacia atlantica," OR " Baneh," OR“ Matricaria chamomilla " OR "Chamomile" OR “Capparis spinosa L “ OR ”Caper” OR ”Legji” OR "Ferulago Angulata” OR “Chavir”)) from 2000 to 29 December 2024 on indexing sites of PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, Google Scholar, SID and, Magiran. According to mentioned topics, 342 articles in the initial stage were screened and 51 relevant articles were selected. Of those, 17 articles fully matched were used.
Results: The majority of the reviewed studies demonstrate the positive effects of these plants on infertility-related parameters; however, a limited number of studies report adverse effects at certain dosages.
Conclusion: Various extracted forms of the mentioned medicinal plants can be effective in improving fertility by promoting the generation of healthy gametes. Elimination the unnecessary compounds, and toxic chemical substances, usage of the proper doses of extraction of the plants, and reduction of the side effects must be considered.
